The Autonomous Driving Act and Implementing Regulation (EU) 2022/1426 have created the national and international legal framework for the introduction and operation of motor vehicles with automated and autonomous driving functions (SAE Level 4). While established approval processes are state of the art for conventional vehicles, comparable processes for vehicles with autonomous driving functions are not or only partially available. The work package therefore deals with the approval process for motor vehicles with autonomous driving functions, taking into account the relevant laws and safety standards.
To enable approval, it is necessary for car manufacturers to be able to assess and justify the potential risk for users and other road users. The aim of this so-called safety argumentation is to demonstrate that the residual risk is sufficiently low, i.e., that a vehicle with an autonomous driving function is at least as safe as a vehicle with a human driver. This requires a comprehensive argumentation covering both the overall product and the entire vehicle life cycle as well as all processes and methods involved in the development.
- Analysis of standards relating to the safety of automated vehicles and automated trucks in particular
- Analysis of legal texts, compliance with which determines both the requirements for the system to be developed and its approval process
- Creation of a safety argumentation for the entire product and its complete life cycle
- Conceptual contributions to the design and evaluation of the safety argumentation of a vehicle according to SAE Level 4
- Proof that the system is safe and the residual risk is sufficiently low
- Individual approval according to StVZO §19(6) as a test vehicle for data acquisition
- Testing permit according to §16 AFGBV
- Development and release concept for SAE Level 4 type approval in accordance with AFGBV and (EU) 2022/1426
